How to Keep Your Teeth White During Fall Event Season

Fall brings plenty of reasons to smile for the camera - weddings, family gatherings, holiday parties, school events, and seasonal celebrations. If you want a brighter smile before a busy event season, professional teeth whitening can help lift stains and refresh the appearance of your teeth. At Hamlin Modern Dentistry, we offer a variety of whitening options to fit your needs!

Choosing the Right Teeth Whitening Option

Every smile is different, which means whitening results vary from person to person. Your natural tooth color, enamel, existing stains, and other factors influence how light your teeth can become. While professional teeth whitening can noticeably brighten your smile, everyone’s teeth will whiten to a different shade of white and some people’s teeth will respond better to the whitening product than others.

We offer an in-office whitening treatment from KöR whitening. This treatment takes two hours and uses the highest strength of whitening gel for a same day result. For those who prefer to whiten in the convenience of their own home, we offer Zoom whitening gel with custom-fitted trays. We have a daytime whitening gel that is quick and convenient as well as an overnight option which is least likely to cause sensitivity.

What About Teeth Sensitivity?

Temporary tooth sensitivity is common during or after whitening. It can occur with both in-office and at-home treatment, although stronger whitening concentrations can sometimes produce more noticeable sensitivity.

If you already have sensitive teeth, we recommend using Sensodyne toothpaste before beginning whitening and continuing to use it throughout treatment. Desensitizing toothpaste can help make the whitening process more comfortable. Choosing the lower-strength overnight at-home whitening option may also be better suited to sensitive teeth.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Last?

Professional teeth whitening is not permanent, but results can remain noticeable for months depending on your habits. How frequently you drink dark beverages, eat staining foods, use tobacco products, and maintain your oral hygiene can all affect how quickly discoloration returns.

Periodic touch-ups may help maintain your preferred shade. We can recommend an appropriate whitening schedule based on your smile and the treatment you choose.

Keep Your Smile Brighter Through Fall

What you eat and drink after whitening can make a significant difference in maintaining your results. To minimize new stains, consider limiting:

•          Coffee and dark tea

•          Red wine

•          Dark sodas

•          Tomato-based sauces

•          Soy sauce and other dark sauces

•          Berries and deeply pigmented fruits

•          Tobacco products

When you do enjoy staining beverages, drinking water afterward can help reduce how long pigments remain on your teeth. Consistent brushing, flossing, and professional dental cleanings are also important for keeping your smile looking fresh.
